800SS build, part 1.

2005 Ducati 800SS supersport project bikeThis past weekend I picked up this 2005 Ducati 800SS from Atlanta Ducati while I was in that area for a track weekend (more on that in the next post). The bike was bought, taken to the track, then wrecked within 200 or so miles. Never titled, insured, etc… so it has a clean title although if it was insured it would have been a goner due to a bent rear section of frame and all of the bodywork being destroyed. I got a good deal on it so this is why I am selling the R6 (which the auction ends tomorrow and will be sold). I have recently bought a full carbon fiber street and also a track body for the latest generation supersport thinking that I’d like to get on in the future so when this one became available I jumped on it.

800SS Project: 1I’ve got some cool ideas for this build. I think I’m going to do an in depth build and the goal will be lightness, superior braking, and handling. I want this to be a really good track bike. Since I have access to a lot of cool parts you’ll see a lot of the items I sell work their way into this build. I also plan on a fair bit of custom work including an aluminum sub-frame, modifications to the main frame, and a custom swing arm that will probably be outsourced. I may end up using a 1000SS aluminum swing arm as I love that design, but we’ll see.

Here are a couple of sketches of possible frame, sub-frame and swing arm combinations. I’ll probably sketch out 15-20 more and then pick the best combination. Stay tuned to this blog as I will be documenting the entire process as I go along. Some parts are already on the way, such as the aluminum tubing for me to make the sub frame with!
