ISR Master Cylinder Tech Info

The other day someone asked me why I sell ISR when there is a giant like Brembo readily available. And while I like and use Brembo (and really like Fred @ Yoyodyne who distributes Brembo) I also like the quality, ingenuity and owner (Acke Rising) of ISR. I love the attention to detail and the thought that goes into every piece to make it as light as possible, as versatile as possible and as smart as possible. Acke does nothing without deep consideration when it comes to the design and manufacturer of his products.

Here is a little technical information on why the ISR racing radial master cylinder is really a cool product that makes a single master cylinder possible to be used on a wide variety of applications for a wide variety of riders!

The idea behind this cylinder is to give the rider a possibility to adjust the leverage to suit his personal preferences. This is done by adjusting the ratio between the rider’s force applied to the  grip  and  the  pressure  in  the  brake  line.  So  either  if  the  rider  is  using  one  or  four  fingers to  control  the  brakes  he still  stays  comfortable.    You  can  easily  adjust  the  mechanical  ratio between 3:1 to 6,6:1 by hand without using any tools.

The  drawing  above  illustrates  a  typical  brake  force  which  outcome  in  a  brake  pressure.  The pressure is studied for different adjustments and cylinder diameters in the plot on next page.

Every  step  along  the  vertical  axis  represents  one  step  marked  on  the  21‐012/014  cylinder. Notice  the  plus  and  the  minus  symbols  which  are  marked  both  in  the  plot  and  on  the cylinder.  For  a  lower ratio  adjust  to  the  plus  sign  and  for  higher  ratio  adjust  to  the  minus sign.    So  for  an  example,  if  you  use a  14mm  piston  in  the  cylinder  you  can  raise  the  brake pressure from approximately 3 bar to nearly 6,5 bar by adjusting the ratio from the lowest to the highest.

We offer this brake master cylinder in three bore sizes; 17.5mm, 15.87mm and 14mm. Since we are mainly Ducati oriented the 15.87mm master cylinder is what we generally sell and stock since it is proper for the Brembo 4 piston 2 or 4 pad calipers and pistons 25mm or less in diameter which come standard on most Ducati Motorcycles. The 17.5mm master cylinder is for 6 piston calipers and pistons 30mm or more in diameter. The 14mm master cylinder is for single caliper setups.

The 14mm master cylinder also works very well as a Ducati clutch master cylinder! The 15.87 can work as a Ducati clutch master cylinder as well, but we have the best results with the 14mm in this application.
